GEARED AT 2.5:1 RATIO GIVES YOU 9000RPM WITH MAX ENGINE RPM OF 3600 FOR OUTPUT VOLTAGE OF 120 VDC.
THE TINY 6 AMP ENGINE ALTERNATOR KEEPS THE BATTERY CHARGED AND PROVIDES 14 VDC FOR AN INCREASE IN FIELD CURRENT TO THE WELDING ALTERNATOR WITH THIS ADDITIONAL 2 VDC ABOVE THE BATTERY VOLTAGE ALONE. I CAN RUN A 5 PEAK HP SHOP-VAC AND A 4.8 AMP GRINDER SIMULTANEOUSLY ON THIS GENERATOR (provided it has a dc or universal motor), AND AT WELDING VOLTAGE MAX OUT AT 160 AMPS. THAT HIGH PITCHED WHISTLE IS THE PULSED CURRENT VIBRATING THE WELD PUDDLE. ENGINE RPM = 3600
GEAR RATIO = 2.5:1 ALTERNATOR RPM = 9000 OR 150 CYCLES PER SECOND X 12 MAGNETIC POLE PIECES X 3 PHASES = 5400HZ WHISTLE.
ADDITIONAL TIP. GENERATING MAX OUTPUT CURRENT REQUIRES ABOUT 2 HP PER KILOWATT TO MAKE UP FOR LOSES AND EFFICIENCY OF COMPONENTS. THIS REQUIRES TREMENDOUS TORQUE SO USE A DOUBLE PULLEY AND BELT ARRANGEMENT AND TRY TO GET CLOSE TO 180 DEGREES OF BELT WRAP ON THE ALTERNATOR PULLEY. WELD THE ALTERNATOR BRACKET AS CLOSE TO THE ENGINE PULLEY AS POSSIBLE AND USE A TURNBUCKLE ATTACHED TO THE ALTERNATOR AND THE UNIT CHASIS TO TIGHTEN THE BELTS. THIS UNIT IS NOW 6 YEARS OLD AND STILL WORKING FINE AND WITH NO SHORT CIRCUIT PROTECTION.
